Why does my amp turn off after just a few seconds?

i unhooked my subs and took them out of the back of my blazer to go camping, when i get back i hook them back up exactly how they were but they wouldnt work and the protection light was staying on, today when i turned my stereo on they thumped for about 6 seconds then the protection light came on again, any ideas of what it would be?
